Biography

Ergy or Erzsy Landau (1896-1967) was a Hungarian-French humanist photographer.

Born in Budapest, Landau worked in Franz Xaver Setzer's Vienna studio and then in Rudolf Dührkoop's studio in Berlin. In 1923 she emigrated to Paris, where she established herself as a portrait photographer. Nora Dumas and Ylla joined her studio in 1930.

Landau met Raymond Grosset on holiday in 1930, and introduced him to the other Hungarian photographers in Paris, who set up the Rapho agency to distribute their work in 1933. After World War II Laundau encouraged Grosset to restart Rapho.

Landau died in Paris.
