Biography

Edmund Wnuk-Lipiński (4 May 1944 – 4 January 2015) was a Polish sociologist, political scientist and writer. A professor of sociology, he was the founder and first headperson of the Polish Academy of Sciences' Institute of Political Studies and the rector of Warsaw-based Collegium Civitas. He was also a fellow at the Institute of Human Sciences in Vienna, the University of Notre Dame, and Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin, as well as a member of the Polish National Council for Civil Service and the National Council for European Integration. He was teaching at the College of Europe (Natolin campus) since 1999.
Apart from his scientific activities, Wnuk-Lipiński was also a successful author of science-fiction novels and novellas, and one of precursors of social science fiction genre in Poland (along with Janusz Zajdel). The middle part of his Apostezjon social fiction dystopia trilogy (Wir pamięci, Rozpad połowiczny, Mord założycielski) received the 1988 Janusz A. Zajdel Award for the best Polish science-fiction novel.
Wnuk-Lipiński was born in Sucha.
