Biography

Dwight Merriman is an American Internet executive and entrepreneur based in New York City, New York. Best known for co-founding DoubleClick with Kevin O'Connor and serving as its CTO for 10 years, Merriman currently serves as the Founder and Chairman of MongoDB Inc.

Biography

Merriman studied computer science at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, in 1986-89.

DoubleClick

In August 1995, he and Kevin O'Connor co-founded DoubleClick, an Internet ad serving provider, in O'Connor's basement in Alpharetta, Georgia. Eventually, they moved to New York City to be closer to media companies and advertising agencies. They hired Kevin P. Ryan who eventually became the CEO of the company.

DoubleClick went public on Nasdaq in 1998. It grew to over 2,400 employees in 25 countries though in the great "dot com bust" in 2000/2001 the company downsized to about 1,200 employees and in the process became very profitable.

In 2005, the company was sold to private equity firm Hellman & Friedman for approximately $1.1 billion, and Merriman stepped down as CTO shortly thereafter. In March 2008, DoubleClick was acquired by Google for $3.1 billion.

AlleyCorp

After leaving DoubleClick, Merriman and the former DoubleClick CEO Kevin Ryan, founded AlleyCorp, a network of affiliated Internet companies, including MongoDB Inc., ShopWiki, Business Insider, and Gilt Groupe. He currently serves as the company's chairman.

MongoDB

In July 2007, Merriman, Kevin Ryan, and a former DoubleClick engineer Eliot Horowitz founded 10Gen, a NoSQL open source database that stores data in JSON-like documents with flexible schemas. The firm originally aimed to build a platform as a service architecture based entirely on open source components; however, the company was unable to find an existing database platform that met their "principles" for a cloud architecture. As a result, the company began to develop a document-oriented database system it called MongoDB. After realizing the potential of the software on its own, 10gen's team decided to scrap its cloud platform and focus on maintaining MongoDB instead. In February 2009, 10gen released MongoDB as an open-source project.

In August 2013, the company was renamed MongoDB Inc. The following year, on August 5th, the company appointed Dev Ittycheria as its President and Chief Executive Officer.

Despite business duties at MongoDB, Merriman still writes code.
