Biography
Comfort Iyabo Amah Momoh is a Nigerian-born midwife in England who specializes in the study and treatment of female genital mutilation (FGM). Originally from Nigeria, Momoh is an FGM and public health specialist at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust in London, where in 1997 she set up the African Well Women's Clinic, dedicated to caring for women affected by FGM. She is also a member of the British FGM national clinical group, established in 2007 to train health professionals in how to deal with the practice.
In 1999 Momoh worked as an adviser to the World Health Organization, and in 2001 represented the UK at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. In 2008 she was awarded an MBE for services to women's healthcare, and an honorary doctorate from Middlesex University. She holds an MA from the University of London, and is an honorary lecturer there. Momoh is the editor of Female Genital Mutilation (2005).
In the 2008 New Year's Honours List Momoh was awarded the MBE for services to women's health.
