Biography

Christa-Maria Lerm Hayes (born 1967) is a German-Irish-Dutch art historian and university professor in Amsterdam.

She studied at the Universities of Heidelberg, London, Bonn and Cologne, where she gained her PhD in 2000. Lerm Hayes spent many years in Ireland and until 2014 she worked as Professor of Iconology at the University of Ulster, Belfast. She is known for showing how artists have read and interpreted James Joyce in her book Joyce in art : visual art inspired by James Joyce.

Lerm Hayes is interested in contemporary art at the edge of actual events, and soon after the Bungehuis and Maagdenhuis occupations of 2015 curated an exhibition of the protest art used during the occupations and that of earlier student protests in Amsterdam.
