Biography

Casper Heinrich Steinfort (December 21, 1814 - ?) was an American farmer and politician from Lake Mills (town), Wisconsin who held various public offices in his area, including serving one term as a Liberal Republican member of the Wisconsin State Assembly from Jefferson County.

Background

He was born in the city of Dortmund, Province of Westphalia, Prussia on December 21, 1814, and received a common school education. While he later described himself as "by occupation a farmer", before leaving Prussia he had been superintendent of a silk factory for several years. He came to the United States in 1848 and settled in Waterloo before moving to Lake Mills in 1867.

Public office

He served for three years as chairman of the Lake Mills town board, and for four years represented his district in Jefferson County's board of supervisors, and held many other local offices. He was elected for 1873 to the Assembly's 2nd Jefferson County district (the Towns of Aztalan, Farmington, Concord, Lake Mills, Milford, Oakland, Waterloo, and the Village of Waterloo) as a Liberal Republican, receiving 1,151 votes, to 941 for regular Republican C. P. Mead. (The incumbent, Democrat WIlliam Hoskins, was not a candidate for re-election.) He was assigned to the standing committee on state lands.

He was not a candidate for re-election, and was succeeded by Democrat Austin Kellogg.
