Il a commencé sa carrière comme juge d'instruction en juin 1984, au TGI de Dax, puis en 1987 au TGI de Bayonne, puis en 1988 à Saint-Pierre (La Réunion).

Il a été connu médiatiquement comme un des magistrats chargés de l'instruction de l'affaire des marchés publics d'Île-de-France.
