Biography

Alyssa Carson (born 2001) is an American trainee astronaut and public speaker. She is one of the world's youngest astronauts in training, and in October 2013, became the first one to complete the NASA Passport Program, having visited all 14 NASA Visitor Centers across nine states in the US and attended all three of NASA's global space camps.

Carson aims to be on the first human mission to Mars around 2033.

Life and education

Alyssa Carson was born in 2001 in Hammond, Louisiana. She attended Baton Rouge International School in Inniswold, Louisiana, graduating in 2019. At the school, she studied all her subjects in 4 different languages: Chinese, English, French and Spanish. She is fluent in Spanish, French, and Chinese.

Growing up, she was fascinated by space and wanted to be an astronaut. In her words, she was inspired by "A Mission to Mars" episode of the Nickelodeon's cartoon/animated television series, The Backyardigans.  Her father Bert Carson supported her aspiration and enrolled her in United States Space Camp in 2008.

In a October 2019 interview with Stylist magazine, when asked what about space appeals to her, she said:

When I was little I realized that no one had ever been to Mars before, and I was really curious about what was out there...It fascinates me – it’s the next planet in the solar system that we really have the technology to be able to travel to. I would love to be one of the first scientists to look for signs of exterior life and study the atmosphere and soil to really see what we can do with Mars.

Since being enrolled in United States Space Camp, by October 2013 she had completed the NASA Passport Program, and visited all 14 NASA Visitor Centers across the US and all the global NASA Space Camps, including Space Camp in  Izmir, Turkey and Space Camp in in Laval, Quebec, Canada.

In October 2016, while attending Baton Rouge International School, she enrolled in Advanced PoSSUM Space Academy program at Embry–Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. She became the the youngest to be accepted and graduate from the program. Following this, in the years 2016-2018, she did higher studies in  astronautics at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and earned a Professional Certification in Applied Astronautics.

In 2019, she enrolled in Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Florida, towards a B.S. degree in Astrobiology.

She has witnessed 3 space Shuttle launches and has also attended Sally Ride Camp at MIT, and three Sally Ride Day camps.

Carson has been featured in a variety of online and television media around the world including BBC, CBS, Independent, NBC Nightly News, and Stylist among others. In November 2014, she was a guest on Steve Harvey show, where she was honored as their youngest Female Groundbreaker.

She has also given numerous public speeches on the topic. In February, 2019, she gave a TED talk titled, "Dreaming of the red planet" at TEDxBucharest in Bucharest, Romania.
