Alois Wotawa's talent as a study composer was that he could ideally incorporate the surprise effect into a mate -study.
It was his technique to position the white and black king as close as to the edge, so that surprising matt threats with little white material are possible.
This made it possible to make sacrifices that at first glance seem pointless and only become clearer through deeper analyzing. Over 80 corrections from Wotawa can be found on the Argentine website.
Alois Wotawa Mate -studies are world famous and very popular with top grandmasters.
