Alexandra Sell (Born 26 November 1968 in Hamburg) is a Berlin-based director and screenwriter.
After her Abitur, she studied Fine Art at the Berlin University of the Arts from 1988 to 1996. During her art studies she worked as a freelance photographer and participated in numerous exhibitions and festivals. She studied in England from 1996 to 1997 with a DAAD scholarship for Great Britain and Postgraduate Studies of Free Art at Goldsmiths College, London. In 1998, she began her postgraduate studies at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and successfully completed her studies in 2001.
There she created her first documentary The Avon Project, a film portrait of three British Avon consultants. The film idea was developed by Sell, after being commissioned by Avon Cosmetics; she photographed the consultants in 1998. The contact remained, and, balancing between project and friendship, Sell showed in the film The Avon project insights into the living and working world of the cosmetics salesmen.
The documentary film "Durchfahrtsland" (2005) was Sells long film debüt, with book and direction. For a year, she and her team accompanied the protagonists in the world of the Vorgebirge. The worldview and the way of life are broken down. The film was produced by Jörg Siepmann and Harry Flöter (2 pilots film production), co-produced by ZDF, Nordmedia, Filmstiftung NRW and the Kuratorium Junger deutscher Film (production). The team included Justyna Feicht and Hennig Drechsler. The Düsseldorf band Kreidler composed the film score. At the Festival des deutschen Films 2005, Sell received the "special award". Also in 2005 the film "Durchfahrtsland " received the "Special Prix Europa" in the category TV Non-Fiction. The prize was donated by the European Parliament for the best program of a local or regional TV channel or the best low-budget production.
Sells first feature film debut The beginner opened on 2 March 2016 at Berlin-Hellersdorf. The novice tells a late coming-of-age story: after more than forty years, the female doctor Annebärbel Buschhaus (Ulrike Krumbiegel) takes the skates again at 58 years. On the ice, the notorious loner looks for her childhood dreams - and finds a friend: Jolina Kuhn, Berlin Youth Champion in figure skating. Through her, she manages to open up and separate herself from her dominant mother. On the ice, Annebärbel meets her former model, the only Berlin figure skater with a world title, Christine Errath, who plays herself in a cameo role.
The film is a production of Berliner Lichtblick Media in co-production with Lichtblick Film, Cine + Filmproduktion, ZDF (Little TV) and ARTE. In 2017.
