Biography

Alexander Thomas "Alex" Griffin is an English bass player and actor. He is the founding member of band Ned’s Atomic Dustbin.

Early life

Griffin was born on 29 August 1971, in Wall Heath, West Midlands, England. He attended Maidensbridge Primary School, England before going to Kingswinford Secondary school, England.

Musical career

In 1988, he along with guitarist, Garath Pring (Rat); vocalist, Jonn Penney; drummer, Dan Worton; and bassist, Matt Cheslin formed the punk band Ned's Atomic Dustbin.

With two bass players, Griffin and Matt Cheslin, in the band, Griffin plays melody lines high up on one bass, and Cheslin plays the regular bass lines on the other. Griffin's bass lines were instantly recognizable, as he played the bass guitar as if it were a lead instrument, similar to Peter Hook from New Order.

Ned's Atomic Dustbin quickly gathered a strong fanbase after being offered a support slot by local heroes The Wonder Stuff on their 1989 and 1990 UK tours. The band went on have 5 Top 40 hit singles and a Top 5 album Godfodder which sold more than half a million copies in 1990.

The band recorded two more albums (Are You Normal? and Brainbloodvolume.)

In 1995, after an extensive US tour to support Brainbloodvolume, the band split up in New York City following what would be their final show. After the split, Griffin completed a degree and now lectures on the music business to students. He also formed a computer based electronic music project called Tickle, mostly for his own enjoyment.

In 2000, Griffin rejoined with Ned's Atomic Dustbin reunion and performed live in England. The success of the gigs convinced the band to continue working together. In June 2006, they released their first single in eleven years, entitled "Hibernation".

In 2004, Griffin appeared in the band’s documentary, Ned's Atomic Dustbin: Session. The documentary goes over the past, present, and future of the band.

On 12 May 2008, the band announced that the original line-up would be performing live together for the first time since 1995, on 6 December 2008 at the Astoria in London.

The band's singer, Jonn Penney, said of the re-union:

It just felt right! There was the understandable awkwardness when we stood in a room together for the first time in 13 years, but that just melted away as soon as we started to play the songs.

The band have now reformed and play regular shows, most recently a sell out show at the 2200 capacity Manchester Academy with support from indie heritage acts, the Wedding Present and The Chameleons. The band also played at the Indie Daze event at the 3200 capacity London Forum on September 13, 2014.
