Biography

Sayyid Muhammed Mashhoor Kunhikoya Thangal (Arabic : سيّد محمّد مشهور كنجكّوي تنجض البريريّ القادري , Malayalam: സയ്യിദ് മുഹമ്മദ് മഷ്ഹൂർ കുഞ്ഞികോയ തങ്ങൾ⁠⁠⁠⁠ ) was born to Sheikh Sayyid Muhammed Mashhoor Mullakoya Thangal Vadakaraand Sayyida Aysha Aatta Beevi on 8th August 1948 (Shawal 2nd, 1367) Sunday in his ancient ancestral house called ‘Aanantavida’ at Vadakara. He was acclaimed for his spiritual leadership, scholarly competence and a social reformer of great stature. His full name is Sheikh Sayyid Muhammed Mashhoor [Abdullah Mashhoor] Kunhikoya Thangal. He is well known as Vadakara Thangal. Sheikh Thangal is the 37th grandson of Prophet Muhammed. Sheikh Thangal who is a Master of Qadiriyya Sufi Order is the 25th generation in the lineage of sufi Masters from Sheikh Abdul-Qadir Gilani and 42nd from Prophet Muhammad.

Early life

After primary education, he completed his studies at Manarul Uloom Madrassa High School, the first educational institution at Vadakara and then took up medicine (Ayurveda) as a profession with his father and Spiritual Master Sayyid Muhammed Mashhoor Mullakoya Thangal Vadakara .

He grew up by putting into practice the most refined traits that he had inherited from his father right from his childhood to adolescence, youth and beyond. As a result, he was subjected to immense blessings and grace of his father. This later paved the way for ultimate spiritual expansion in him. He received knowledge in medical profession under the guidance of his father and assisted him in it. Soon he excelled in it. Owing to his professional excellence and skill he had received government recognition and registration to manufacture medicine and practice as an ayurvedic physician. In addition to having in depth knowledge in widely popular medical texts, he had received knowledge of rare medical procedures and medicine handed down to generations from an ancient stream of Siddha Vaidya.

Family

The famous Sayyid ancestry Mashhoor is the Qabeela of Kunhikoya Thangal. Mashhoor lineage started in Kerala through Great Sufi Scholar Abdurahman Mashhoor who came to Kerala in 1710 C.E from Yemen.

He got married to Sayyida Asma Muthu Beevi from a well- known Sayyid family of Ponnani Vettom Pokkiriyakam.

He is a descendant of Great Sufi Scholar and Spiritual Master Sayyid Cheruseethi Thangal (1669 - 1771).


In the spiritual world

He was attracted to Sufi Tariqa and received disciple-hood from his most reverent father Sayyid Muhammed Mashhoor Mullakoya Thangal. The divine grace that he received from that relationship was ardently pursued through the path of Tariqa. Following to his father’s demise, he became the spiritual master of Qadiriyya, Chisthiya (chisti), Tabaqathiya and Zuharawardiya paths of Tariqa. He has a lot of disciples both inside and outside Kerala.

He offers consolations to people who come regularly from different parts of the world and gives solutions to their problems irrespective of religious and caste distinctions both in worldly and spiritual matters. He is held in high esteem and respected by all.

Demise

Sheikh Thangal departed on the 10th of June 2017 (15th Ramadan 1438 A.H). His divine grace imparted the light of love, spirituality and brotherhood in the hearts of many thousands. He is laid to eternal rest at the Makham'ul Waseela at Karimpanapalam, Vadakara in Kozhikode.
