V. K. Govindan

Dr. V. K. Govindan (born April 30, 1950) is a professor, retired fromthe Department of Computer Science and Engineering at National Institute of Technology, Calicut. He has received bachelor's and master's degreesin electrical engineering from Regional Engineering College Calicut (now NIT Calicut) in the year 1975 and 1978, respectively. He has obtainedPhD degree from one of the premier institute in India, IISc Bangalore. He has more than 35 years of teaching experience at under graduate and post graduate levels. He served as Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, NIT Calicut during the years 2000 to 2005. He was Dean Academicof NIT Calicut during 2011 to 2014.

His research areas includeImage processing, Pattern Recognition, Machine Learning, Data Compression, Document Imaging and Operating Systems.

He devoted his life to study, teaching and doing research. He has more than 165 research publicationsincluding 90 international Journal papers, and authored20 books. He has evaluated many PhDs thesis and produced sevenPhDs. Currently, he is guiding tenPhD scholars. He has also refereed many papers for Journals and conferences.

He has also served as resource person in the following projects:

• As Principal Investigator of Project entitled Development of Infrastructure for Image processing and character recognition research.
• As co-investigator of project entitled Design and Development of an ECG monitoring equipment and diagnostic expert.
• As Principal Investigator of project entitled Human face recognition from photographs.
• As Principal Investigator of project entitled As400 mainframe and Application Center, under thrust area.
• As Co-ordinator of Project entitled Imaging and vision Lab under MODROB.
• As Principal Investigator of project entitled Design and development of adaptive wavelet compression algorithms, ongoing Research project.
