Biography

Tyssul "Tuss" Griffiths (6 June 1919 — 1979 (aged 59–60)) born in Bridgend, was a Welsh rugby union and professional rugby league footballer of the 1940s and 1950s, playing representative level rugby union (RU) for Wales XV, and at club level Newport RFC, as a Fullback, i.e. number 15, and playing representative level rugby league (RL) for Wales, and at club level Hunslet, Doncaster, Halifax, and Dewsbury, as a Fullback, i.e. number 1, he died in Leeds.

Tuss Griffiths represented Wales XV (RU) while at Llanelli RFC in the 'Victory International' non-Test match(es) between December 1945 and April 1946,and won 2 caps for Wales (RL) in 1946–1951 while at Hunslet and Doncaster.

Six rugby league footballers represented Wales XV (RU) while at rugby league clubs, they were; Tyssul Griffiths, Elwyn Gwyther, Gomer Hughes, Hugh Lloyd-Davies, Harold Thomas, and Leslie Thomas.

Gomer Hughes, and Harold Thomas had previously won Wales (RU) caps, but the other footballers hadn't, and having already changed to the rugby league code they were unable to do so, but Tyssul Griffiths, Elwyn Gwyther, Leslie Thomas, did go on to win Wales (RL) caps.

Challenge Cup final appearances

Tuss Griffiths played Fullback in Halifax's 4-4 draw with Warrington in the 1954 Challenge Cup final during the 1953–54 season at Wembley Stadium, London on Saturday 1 May 1954, and played Fullback, and scored 2-conversions in the 4-8 defeat by Warrington in the 1954 Challenge Cup final replay during the 1953–54 season at Odsal Stadium, Bradford on Wednesday 5 May 1954, in front of a record crowd of 102,575 or more, and played in Halifax's 2-13 defeat by St. Helens in the 1956 Challenge Cup final during the 1955–56 season at Wembley Stadium, London on Saturday 28 April 1956.

Tuss Griffiths is one of less than twenty-five Welshmen to have scored more than 1000-points in their rugby league career.
