Biography

Tyrese Maxey (born November 4, 2000) is an American professional basketball player for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Kentucky Wildcats.

High school career

Maxey played high school basketball for South Garland High School in Garland, Texas.

As a junior, he averaged 22.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.3 steals, leading his team to a 36–4 record. As a senior, he averaged 22.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.7 steals, leading his team to a 30–7 record.

Recruiting

On May 9, 2018, Maxey committed to play college basketball at the University of Kentucky over Southern Methodist University.

College career

In Maxey's collegiate debut for Kentucky, he scored 26 points in a 69–62 win over first-ranked Michigan State. He had a career-high 27 points in a 78–70 overtime win over rival Louisville on December 28. At the conclusion of the regular season, Maxey was named to the Second Team All-SEC and the All-Freshman Team. Maxey averaged 14 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. Following the season, Maxey declared for the 2020 NBA draft.

Professional career

Philadelphia 76ers (2020–present)

Maxey was selected with 21st overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2020 NBA draft. On December 3, he signed with the 76ers. On January 9, 2021, in his first career start, he recorded 39 points, seven rebounds, and six assists in a 115–103 loss to the Denver Nuggets when the Sixers were only able to have seven players in their rotation. Maxey’s 39 points were the most by an NBA rookie in their first career start since 1970.

National team career

Maxey played for the United States under-18 basketball team at the 2018 FIBA Under-18 Americas Championship. He helped his team win the gold medal.
