Biography

Tyreke Wilson (born 2 December 1999), is an Irish footballer who plays for Manchester City as an defender, primarily in a left-back role. He is a product of both the Manchester City and Cherry Orchard academies and has been capped by the Republic of Ireland at youth level.

Cherry Orchard

Wilson joined Ballyfermot schoolboy side Cherry Orchard when he was eight-years-old. Orchard famously had produced a number of senior Irish internationals in the past, including Andy Reid and Manchester City academy graduate, Glenn Whelan.

Around the same time as Wilson joined the club, Cherry Orchard signed a partnership agreement with Manchester City, forming a joint scouting network and a pathway for promising players from Dublin, to join the Premier League club's academy. At the age of 13, Wilson began regularly training with Manchester City's youth sides. Soon after doing so, Wilson suffered a devastating leg break.

Manchester City

On 5 July 2016, Wilson signed a four-year contract with Manchester City. On 7 February 2017 Wilson received his first call-up to train with the Man City first-team. In his second season with Man City in 2017-18, the defender made eight appearances in the Professional Development League, in which City finished in 6th place in Division 1. He also made three appearances in the group stage of the UEFA Youth League, lining out against Feyenoord and Shakhtar Donetsk.

Wilson had a promising start to the 2018-19 season by being included in Pep Guardiola's senior Man City squad for their pre-season tour of the United States of America but was an unused substitute in the games against Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. Domestically, Wilson featured nine times for City, as they finished 8th place in Division 1 of the Professional Development League. On 28 August 2018 Wilson made his EFL Trophy debut, lining out for Manchester City against Shrewsbury Town in a 1-1 draw (which Shrewsbury won 3-1 in a penalty shoot-out).

International career

Wilson has been capped by the Republic of Ireland since U15 level. He made his U19 international debut against Austria in September 2016 and went on to win a further eight caps at that level, including significant victories over Italy and Belgium. On June 15, 2019, Wilson made his debut for the Ireland U21 side, in a 4-3 penalty shoot-out loss to Mexico. The game was the 3rd/4th place play-off for the 2019 Toulon Tournament.

Personal life

Wilson's older brother, John Ross Wilson, currently plays for Shelbourne in the League of Ireland First Division. Like Tyreke, John Ross is also a defender. Their father, Karl, was also an Irish underage international who played for Coventry.
