Trey Burton

Trey Burton (born October 29, 1991) is an American football tight end for the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the University of Florida and was signed by the Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2014.

Burton was born in Venice, Florida. He attended Venice High School, where he was a standout dual-threat quarterback for the Venice Indians high school football team. As the Indians starting junior quarterback in 2008, he completed 80 of 133 pass attempts for 1,399 yards and 12 touchdowns, while rushing for 919 yards and 24 touchdowns. As a senior in 2009, he passed for 1,876 yards with 18 touchdowns and only one interception, and rushed for 821 yards and 22 touchdowns, leading the team to a 9–2 record. He was a first-team all-state selection both years.

Burton accepted an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Florida, where he played for coach Urban Meyer and coach Will Muschamp's Florida Gators football teams from 2010 to 2013. Originally recruited as a quarterback in Urban Meyer's spread offense, he played several positions for the Gators, including wide receiver, tight end, fullback and quarterback. As a freshman in 2010, he broke Tim Tebow's team record for touchdowns in a single game with six. In 50 career games with Florida, he had 720 rushing yards, 976 receiving yards and 20 total touchdowns.

Burton was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles after going undrafted in the 2014 NFL Draft. After training camp, Burton made the Eagles 53-man roster to start the season, after a 9 catch, 100 yard, and 1 touchdown preseason campaign. He also brought versatility to the team playing special teams and working as a fullback as well. He finished his season with 5 carries for 10 yards, 4 tackles on special teams, and in the season finale of his rookie year, Burton scored a touchdown recovering a punt blocked by James Casey. This was his first touchdown of his career, and his only touchdown during his rookie season.

In 2015 Burton entered the season with a bit more hype behind him after another solid preseason stat line, this time catching 8 passes for 78 yards, and 2 TD's. He went on to become a key special teams contributor with 13 tackles, and 3 receptions for 54 yards.

In 2016 Burton was again hyped as a break out candidate despite contract extensions for Brent Celek, and Zach Ertz. Burton caught 7 passes for 48 yards and 1 TD - further cementing his status on the 53 man roster. In week 1, Burton was inactive recovering from an injury. But in week 2, he started showing glimpses into his potential with 5 receptions for 49 yards and 1 TD against the Chicago Bears. In week 14 Burton played one down as a long snapper after injuries to starter Jon Dorenbos and substitute Brent Celek. Eagles scored a field goal to take a 22-21 lead over Washington Redskins off Burton's snap.

On March 7, 2017, the Eagles placed a second round restricted free agent tender on Burton. He officially signed his tender on April 3, 2017.
