Born in Lebanon, he immigrated to Canada at age 10. He resided first in Montreal, and then in Ottawa in his late teens and eventually to Toronto. At age 15, he convinced his friend's mother to give him the keys to the family's closed restaurant space, where after quick renovations, he turned it into a venue for small high school parties with an in-house DJ. As CEO of the label, Sal also signed promising Canadian artists, notably Massari. He was also credited with various music production and songwriting. The company eventually moved from Ottawa to Toronto and operates since 2014 as CP Music Group.
After meeting Canadian artist of Ethiopian origin Abęl Makkonen Tesfaye in the late 2010s, better known as The Weeknd, Sal co-managed the artist alongside Iranian-American producer Amir "Cash" Esmailian. The Weeknd went on to be nominated for seven awards for the 58th Grammy Awards and reaping two Grammy Awards and was nominated for an Academy Award. Sal funneled his entrepreneurial knowhow into launching Tesfaye's career, and establishing The Weeknd's own record label XO where Sal operates as CEO of XO/Sal & Co.
