Life

Born in La Roda, Albacete, he studied philosophy at the University of Valencia before studying under Ramón Menéndez Pidal at the Universidad Central de Madrid, gaining his PhD in Romance philology in 1908. After further study in France, Germany, and Switzerland, he was appointed professor at the Center for Historical Studies in Madrid.
