Biography

Thomas Eldon "Tom" Hayhurst (born July 5, 1942) is a former city council member from Fort Wayne, Indiana. He unsuccessfully sought Indiana's 3rd District Congressional seat as the Democratic nominee in 2006 and 2010.

Background

Hayhurst was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on July 5, 1942. He grew up in Fort Wayne, Indianapolis and Chicago, Illinois. He is married to Judy Hayhurst. He and his wife have two grown daughters, Anne and Susan. The Hayhursts have been members of the First Presbyterian Church of Fort Wayne since 1972.

Education and military service

Hayhurst graduated from Indiana University, Bloomington in 1964. He graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine at Indianapolis in 1967 with an M.D. He completed an Internal Medicine Residency and Pulmonary-Critical Care Fellowship training at Indiana University Medical Center (Indianapolis), Grady Memorial Hospital/Emory University (Atlanta), and Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland).

A Vietnam-era veteran, Hayhurst served as a Capt. Major in the United States Air Force. From 1969-1971, he served as General Medical Officer on active duty at various military installations across the United States.

Medical career and civic awards

From 1974-2005, Hayhurst practiced medicine as Pulmonary-Critical Care specialist at Indiana Medical Associates in Fort Wayne. He currently serves as Medical Director of the Tuberculosis Control Division of the Infectious Disease Center, a part of the Fort Wayne-Allen County Health Department.

Dr. Hayhurst has served as a clinical Assistant Prof. of Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine and is a member of the Boards of Arts United, Arthritis Foundation, Indiana High Speed Rail Assoc, and Invent Tomorrow. He is also a founding member of Veterans for Better Health Care, the Wolf Lake Free Health Clinic, the pulmonary clinic at Matthew 25 Free Health and Dental Clinic in Fort Wayne and the Northeast Indiana Passenger Rail Association.

A recipient of numerous awards and recognition, Hayhurst was awarded the "Americanism Award for Outstanding Service and Leadership" by the Allen County Council of Veterans in both 2005 and 2006 as well as the Indiana Public Health Assoc. Local Elected Official Award in 1999.

Fort Wayne city council

From 1996-2008, Hayhurst served on the Fort Wayne City Council. He represented the 4th District of Fort Wayne, which now includes the annexed potions of Aboite Township, in rural Allen County.

Congressional campaigns

Hayhurst won the Democratic primary election for Indiana's 3rd congressional district over Rev. Kevin Boyd on 2 May 2006. Hayhurst raised over $690,517 in comparison to Souder's $622,034 in 2006. He was defeated by Mark Souder by a 54-46% margin, the closest in Souder's congressional career.

Key issues during Hayhurst's 2006 congressional campaign were job creation, affordable health care and veterans services in his bid to unseat Rep. Mark Souder.

Hayhurst filed a report with the Federal Election Commission terminating his campaign committee on December 29, 2006. He chose not to file as a candidate for Congress in 2008. Hayhurst was the 2010 Democratic candidate for the 3rd district congressional election.Republican State Senator Marlin Stutzman defeated Hayhurst and Libertarian nominee Scott Wise in both the regular and special election for the seat. Stutzman received 63% of the vote in defeating Hayhurst, who garnered only 33%.

Hayhurst advocates local economy/jobs, green energy, is pro-Second Amendment, veterans, education, and healthcare.
