Biography
Thomas Francis Gunning (March 4, 1862 – March 17, 1931) was a Major League Baseball catcher. He played all or part of six seasons in the majors, from 1884 until 1889, for the Boston Beaneaters, Philadelphia Quakers and Philadelphia Athletics.
Gunning was used mainly as a reserve catcher, never playing in more than 48 games in a season. He played that many in 1885 for the Beaneaters, which was more than any other catchers for Boston that year. In his last two seasons, he served as backup to Wilbert Robinson, who went on to a Hall of Fame career as a manager.
