Biography

Tim Rymel is a former ex-gay leader who worked as the outreach director of Memphis, Tennessee ex-gay ministry Love in Action, between 1991–1996. Rymel quietly came out as gay in 2008. In 2014, he released his memoir, Going Gay My Journey from Evangelical Christian Minister to Self-Acceptance, Love, Life, and Meaning, for which former Love in Action executive director, John Smid, wrote the forward. Rymel was previously married to a woman and has two children from that marriage.

In July 2014, he signed a statement condemning reparative therapy for minors, along with eight other former leaders and founders of ex-gay ministry. The statement was released through the National Center for Lesbian Rights as part of the #BornPerfect Campaign.

In November 2018, Rymel released his third book, Rethinking Everything When Faith and Reality Don't Make Sense in which he addresses the toxic beliefs of fundamentalist Christianity.

Rymel is social justice writer who writes on the confluence of religion, politics, and sexuality. His work has appeared in The Good Men Project, Huffpost, Medium, Church and State, Ravishly and other publications. He continues to publicly denounce the ex-gay movement, and call for an end to reparative therapy. Rymel is the co-host of the Recovering from Religion Podcast. He is also the author of the business book Everything I Learned About Management I Learned from Having a Kindergartner, and he lives with his husband Northern California.
