Coaching career

DeRuyter became Texas A&M's defensive coordinator in 2010. The Aggies ranked 104th in scoring defense in 2009, under a 4–3 defense. In 2010, under his 3–4 defense, they improved to 21st in scoring defense.
He was interviewed for the head coaching position at California State University, Fresno, and was selected to be the new head coach of the Fresno State Bulldogs for the 2012 season.
