Biography

T Barny, (born August 8, 1956) is a native of California with a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, and an MFA from the Royce School of Design. He has been creating sculpture professionally for over three decades. During his career, he has produced over 900 sculptures ranging from one-foot-tall tabletop pieces to twelve-foot-tall corporate and public installations weighing upwards of 9 tons. He owns and operates the T Barny Gallery & Sculpture Gardens, and is an instructor and guest artist at various sculpture symposiums worldwide. He has a passion for sculpting stone, but has worked in a wide variety of materials, including bronze, wood, water, steel, and ice. Known for his stone Moebius “Celtic Knots” and curvilinear shapes, T Barny has won various awards such as “Best Body of Work”, “Award of Excellence”, “Editor’s Choice Award”, and a “Purchase Award” from the California Museum of Art. His resume of exhibitions and awards span the full 35 years of his career, and his pieces hold prestigious placement in collections internationally. T Barny has participated in over 400 individual and group exhibitions in more than 90 galleries worldwide. He frequently gives talks about the art of carving with a diamond-tipped chain saw and the history of stone sculpture. His work is collected in 21 countries.

Early life & education

T Barny was born in San Francisco, California, the youngest of three siblings. He attended Choate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut where he found his love of art. He attended Denison, Stanford and Brown Universities before receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1980. In 1984, he received his Masters of Fine Art from the Royce School of Design in Silicon Valley. Since 1984, he has lived and worked in the Alexander Valley Wine Country.

In recent years, T Barny has become a mentor and instructor to many young and aspiring sculptors, especially through the Central California Sculpture Symposium in Cambria, California, the Northwest Stone Sculpture Symposium in Mt. Vernon, Washington and the Southwest Stone Carving Symposium in Jemez Springs, New Mexico. He has also taught at the Mendocino Art Center in California and The Carving Studio in West Rutland, Vermont. T Barny has also been honored to be an “Artist in Residence” in Carrara, Italy – Tinos, Greece – Woodstock, New York – Lawrence, Kansas - California and Texas.

Sculpture career

Materials

T Barny has worked with a large variety of materials, including stone, bronze, wood, steel, water and ice. His passion lies in carving with stone from all corners of the world. As of August 8, 2016, he has completed works in 200 types of stone sourced from 43 individual countries.

Mobius, Superellipsoid, Curvilinear & Abstract

Though he is known for his moebius “Celtic Knot” designs, he also works with a variety of superellipsoid, curvilinear and abstract shapes. His flowing, curvilinear sculptures have been lauded by patrons and critics internationally.

Commissions

Specific size and stone pieces are regularly commissioned by the artist, T Barny. He has carved site specific pieces for individual and corporate spaces, including Dow Jones, Inc, Sonoma State University, Kendall Jackson Wine Estates, McDonald's Corp., Microsoft, Heller First Capital Corp., PepsiCo, as well as a large variety of others.

Bronzes

T Barny has a selection of bronze limited editions in a range of three patina colors he formulated himself. The pieces in the bronze collection define his style of work, presenting stone sculptures transformed into a different medium. As they are not made from clay, plaster, or wax models, T Barny's work in bronze shares the integrity of the original stone form in a different material and color palette.
