Biography
Shelley Hughes (born January 6, 1958 in Canton, Ohio) is an American politician and a Republican member of the Alaska State Senate, serving since 2017. Hughes was previously a member of the Alaska House of Representatives from January 18, 2013 until January 22, 2017, representing District F.
Education
Hughes earned her AA from Cuyahoga Community College and her BA in English rhetoric from the University of Alaska Anchorage.
Elections
- 2012 With Democratic Representative David Guttenberg running for the District 8 seat, Hughes won the District 8 August 28, 2012 Republican Primary with 1,813 votes (71.89%), and won the November 6, 2012 General election with 6,183 votes (95.64%) against write-in candidates.
- Elections for the office of Alaska House of Representatives took place in 2014, however the districts has been changed by the Matanuska-Susitna Borough and the previous seat (8) was updated to District 11. A primary election took place on August 19, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature-filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was June 2, 2014. Pete P. LaFrance was unopposed in the Democratic primary, while District 8 incumbent Shelley Hughes was unopposed in the Republican primary. Hughes defeated LaFrance in the general election for the new District 11 seat with 5,268 (69.8%) of the vote; LaFrance had 2,275 (30.2%) of the vote.
