Samuel Davies

Samuel Davies was an American clergyman and educator. He was born on November 3, 1723, in New Castle County, Delaware and died on February 4, 1761, in Princeton, New Jersey.

Samuel Davies was known for his work as a prominent Presbyterian preacher and educator in colonial Virginia. He played a significant role in the religious and educational development of the southern colonies.

Samuel Davies received his education at the Faggs Manor Presbytery School, a school established by the Synod of Philadelphia to train ministers. He also attended the College of New Jersey (now known as Princeton University) and graduated in 1754.

Samuel Davies was the first non-Anglican to be the official College president in the American colonies. He served as the fourth President of the College of New Jersey from 1759 until his death in 1761. He was also a prolific writer and preacher, known for his passionate and eloquent sermons.

Samuel Davies played a significant role in spreading the Presbyterian faith in colonial Virginia. He preached to both white settlers and enslaved Africans, advocating for their spiritual freedom. He is credited with promoting religious tolerance and helping to break down barriers between denominations.
