Biography
Sam Easterson (born 1972) is an American award-winning video artist known for his work with animals.
Early life and education
Easterson was born in 1972 in Glastonbury, Connecticut.
In 1990, he moved to New York City, where he received a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, in 1994. At the Cooper Union he studied with multimedia artist Tony Oursler.
After graduating from the Cooper Union, he moved to Minnesota and received a Master's degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Career
Easterson has been reviewed in The New York Times, the Village Voice, and FlashArt International, among other publications.
His work has been shown by institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Walker Art Center, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, the Williams College Museum of Art in Williamstown MA, the World Wide Video Festival in Amsterdam, the Late Show With David Letterman, Animal Planet, the European Media Arts Festival in Osnabrück, the Sydney Film Festival, and the CyberArts Festival in Boston.
Easterson is a recipient of numerous national grants/awards, including the Louis Comfort Tiffany prize and a Creative Capital Award.
Easterson is also the Founder and Director of Animal, Vegetable, Video, an organization dedicated to building the world’s largest and most comprehensive library of video footage that has been captured from the points of view of animals and plants. The organization has been profiled by the Sundance Channel, Minnesota Public Radio, Filmmaker Magazine and RES, and their work has been exhibited at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles.
