Salt Walther

George Frederick "Salt" Walther III (November 22, 1947 – December 27, 2012) was an American racing driver. He participated in two Indianapolis 500 races, with a best finish of 17th in 1976.

Walther raced in various car racing championships during his career. He competed in the USAC Championship Car series, the National Championship and the Indianapolis 500. He also competed in multiple sprint car races.

Walther's most notable and unfortunate moment was during the 1973 Indianapolis 500 when he was involved in a major accident at the start of the race. His car collided with other cars, went airborne, crashed into the catch fence, and burst into flames. Walther suffered severe burns as a result of the accident.

Walther is portrayed in the 2005 film 'Indianapolis' by actor Darren Eliker. The film depicts the events leading up to and following the 1973 Indianapolis 500 accident in which Salt Walther was involved.

Despite his accident, Salt Walther's determination and courage to continue racing in the face of adversity is admired by many racing enthusiasts. He will always be remembered for his fearlessness and resilience on the race track.
