Biography

Rufus Black is the Master of Ormond College at the University of Melbourne. A strategic advisor, ethicist and theologian, he works on public policy, ethical and education issues. Black is involved across the education sector as Master of Ormond, as Deputy Chancellor of Victoria University, as the Founding Chair of the Board for Teach for Australia and as a director of the New York-based Teach for All. Black's public policy work has included leading the Budget Audit of the Department of Defence in 2009, the Accountability and Governance Review of the Department of Defence ("The Black Review") in 2010 and the Prime Minister’s Independent Review of the Australian Intelligence Community in 2011. He has been the Strategic Advisor to the Secretary for Education in Victoria since 2012. Black is a principal fellow in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Melbourne and teaches for the Centre for Ethical Leadership. He is a director of the law firm Corrs Chambers Westgarth and of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute. Before becoming Master of Ormond, Black worked at McKinsey & Company for nine years where he was a partner. He holds degrees in law and politics from the University of Melbourne and graduate degrees in moral theology from the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar.
