Biography
Ron Diehl is an American saxophonist and jazz musician in Washington, DC.
In 1965, Diehl played saxophone, bassoon, flute, and piccolo as a member of the United States Naval Academy Band. In 1973, he was selected to play with the Navy's official Jazz Ensemble, the "Commodores", where he held the position of lead sax and section leader until June 1991.
Diehl currently plays with both the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for pops concerts and special events including the annual NSO Memorial Day and Fourth of July broadcasts on PBS.
He has played in many shows, including with Nancy Wilson, Hal Linden, Bob Hope, Sarah Vaughan, Mel Torme, Chita Rivera, Vic Damone, Tony Randall, Barbara Eden, Rosemary Clooney, Johnny Mathis, Diane Schuur, and Tony Bennett.
In 1987, Diehl played alto saxophone on Bill Potts Big Band's album 555 Feet High alongside Paul Schortgen (baritone saxophone); Paul Langosch (bass); Chuck Redd (drums); Paul Wingo (guitar); Dave Steinmeyer, John Jensen (trombone); Vaughn Nark, Kenny Smukal (trumpet); and Jim Hayward (tenor saxophone)
In 2007, he played on Tad Robinson's album A New Point Of View (Severn Records – CD 0040).
Diehl has been Director of Jazz Ensembles at Towson University, Instructor of Saxophone, Jazz Band Director, and Instructor of Jazz Improvisation at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) as well as Instructor of Clarinet and Saxophone at Prince Georges Community College. He has been guest conductor of the Armed Forces School of Music Jazz Band and presented master classes at Ohio State University Jazz Festival, Middletown High School, Baldwin Wallace Conservatory, Landon School, Wesley College, Anne Arundel All County High School Stage Band, and Delaware State Jazz Band.
