Biography
Robert Stefanotti (born 1947) is an American author, gallerist, minister, and professor. In 1973, at 26 years old, Stefanotti opened his first gallery, which was influential in photo-realism. While operating Stefanotty Gallery in Manhattan in the 1970s, Stefanotti showed the works of many artists who went on to make important contributions to contemporary art, including Malcolm Morley, Larry Rivers, Vito Acconci, William Wegman (photographer), Anne Tardos, and Dennis Oppenheim. Other artists included Larry Fink, Lowell Nesbitt, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Howard Kanovitz, Les Levine, Roger Welch, Allan Kaprow, Charlemagne Palestine, Agnes Denes, and Marta Minujin. Stefanotty Gallery also featured street artists like Colette Justine who painted giant lips outside of the gallery's 50 W. 57th Street location in New York City.
The Stefanotty Gallery closed for three years and later re-opened as Stefanotti Gallery, which reflects his original Italian family name, in 1979. At this location, Stefanotti showed the works of artists like Hunt Slonem, Diane Burko, Nina Yankowitz, Duncan Hannah, Jimmy De Sana, and R.M.Fischer.
Teaching
Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome; Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy (now the Loyola Institute at Trinity, Dublin); and Georgian Court University, NJ; and Savannah College of Art and Design. Stefanotti developed courses in Art and Spirituality, the Early Modern French School, and Contemporary Art.
