Biography

Richard Lacayo is an American journalist, an art and architecture critic, currently a senior writer for Time magazine. Since 2013, he has been serving as the editor-at-large for Time magazine. He has also written for CNN, People Magazine, Money, Foreign Policy, and Air Mail.

Career

For Time magazine, Lacayo has written about Robert Hughes, the well-known Australian-born art critic, writer, and producer of television documentaries: The Art of Being Critical: Robert Hughes (1938–2012), Aug. 07, 2012 and the New York attorney Donn Zaretzky (Hard Sell, Dec. 30, 2008). In 2001, he wrote about American justice Thurgood Marshall in Marshall's Legacy: A Lawyer Who Changed America.

In November 2019, Lacayo for Airmail reviewed the book The Lives of Lucian Freud: The Restless Years: 1922-1968 by British art critic William Feaver. In April 2020, he wrote All About Andy, a biographical account of acclaimed American artist Andy Warhol.

In 2009, Lacayo also wrote about Polish-American architect Daniel Libeskind in an article titled The Architecture of Autocracy for Foreign Policy magazine.

List of the 100 Best Novels

Lacayo and Time's senior writer and book critic Lev Grossman compiled Time's List of the 100 Best Novels — an unranked list of the 100 best novels published in the English language between 1923 and 2005. The list includes such works as George Orwell's 1984, Robert Penn Warren's All the King's Men, Jack Kerouac's On the Road, Joseph Heller's Catch-22, and Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind.

In 2012, Lacayo was seen in filmmaker Joe Medeiros's The Missing Piece: Mona Lisa, Her Thief, the True Story. Also seen in the documentary are: Celestina Peruggia (daughter of Vincenzo Peruggia, famous for stealing the Mona Lisa on 21 August 1911), Italian Prime Minister (1922 - 1943) Benito Mussolini, art journalist Jérôme Coïgnard, British historian Donald Sassoon, British psychoanalyst Darian Leader, and American authors Thomas Hoobler and Dorothy Hoobler, among others.

In June 2015, Lacayo was featured in The Architect Says "Why Can't I?" — an ABC TV documentary that explores the career of Canadian-born American architect Frank Gehry. The documentary, written by Helen Vatsikopoulos and directed by Sally Aitken and Luke McMahon, is presented by BBC presenter Alan Yentob, Australian architecture critic Elizabeth Farrelly, American architectural critic Paul Goldberger, Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, American architecture critic Blair Kamin, American philanthropist Cindy Pritzker (wife of Jay Pritzker), among others.
