Biography

Richard J. Stern (September 26, 1913 - December 31, 2001) was a Kansas City businessman and philanthropist. Both his professional and charitable efforts made lasting marks on the Kansas City community. His firm, now known as Stern Brothers Valuation Advisors, managed the bond deals for the Kansas City International Airport, the Truman Sports Complex, and Kemper Arena. The Kansas City Art Institute's ceramics building is named for him, and he made significant contributions to the Kansas City Symphony, for which he was a founding trustee.

Legacy

Stern's charitable giving focused on the arts during his lifetime, and upon his death, the Richard J. Stern Foundation for the Arts was established to cultivate arts programming in the five-county Kansas City area.
