Biography

Rebeca Z. Gyumi is a Lawyer, and currently works as a TV and Radio presenter at Femina, a youth focused behavior change and strategic communication organization. She travels out to the field meet with Tanzanian youth, discuss pertinent issues and help create solutions for the same.

Early life and education

She was born in Dodoma Tanzania. She went Mazengo Primary School in Dodoma for her primary education. She obtained her secondary school education from Kikuyu Day Secondary in Dodoma and later went to Kilakala High School In Morogoro for high school level. She then went to University of Dar Es Salaam where she graduated with Law Degree

Career

Rebeca Gyumi is a Founder and Director at Msichana Initiative, a local NGO which aims to empower girl child through education and address key challenges which limit girl right to education. She has worked for over 8 years with Femina as TV personality and youth advocate.

Rebeca is involved in different campaign and social charities as a volunteer and ambassador, advocating for safe schools and quality education to Tanzanian students. She works to achieve a changed society where citizens are involved in creating solutions for their own pressing problems.

She has paneled and facilitated different national and international forums, with focus on youth empowerment. In Nov, 2013, she was selected by US embassy Tanzania under US Department of state to attend International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP) for youth with leadership potential.

Rebeca serves as Vice-President for Tanzania Association of US State Alumni (TUSSAA), Trek4Mandela Tanzania leg ambassador, and sits on the Board of SNV-Netherlands OYE project.

Her passion to end child marriages in Tanzania In July 2016 she put a petition at Tanzania High Court ruled that the Marriage Act – which allowed girls as young as 14 to be married – was unconstitutional.

She later won United Nations Global Goals Awards in social change category due to efforts in ending child marriages in Tanzania, the awards ceremony took place in New York City, U.S.A
