Ray Mercy is an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s.He played for Parramatta Eels and the North Queensland Cowboys in the Australian Rugby League, Super League (Australia) and NRL competitions.
Playing career
Mercy made his first grade debut for Parramatta in Round 7 1995 coming off the bench against Auckland in a 40-4 loss at Parramatta Stadium.Mercy played 9 games for Parramatta in his debut season which were all losses as the club endured one of their worst ever years on the field finishing second last and only winning 3 matches out of a possible 22 games.At the end of 1995, Mercy was released by Parramatta as the club was looking to rebuild for the 1996 season.
In 1997, Mercy joined North Queensland who had signed on to play in the rival Super League competition during the Super League war.Mercy scored 6 tries in 6 games for the club but it wasn't enough to save the side from coming last on the table and claim the wooden spoon.In 1998, Mercy played 24 games and scored 12 tries for North Queensland as the club finished 16th on the table.Mercy set a club record for most tries in a game when he scored 4 tries against Balmain.At the end of 1998, Mercy was released by North Queensland.In 2006, Mercy switched codes to play rugby union with Grafton in Northern New South Wales.Mercy had been playing rugby league for Northern Rivers, Lower Clarence and South Grafton before deciding to join the Grafton union side.
