Professor Mammad Mammadov

Prominent Literary Scholar, Ph. D. in philology

MAMMAD MAMMADOV son of Mahmud was born in 1930 in First Shikhli Village, Qazakh District. He completed the high school course in his home village then admitted to and completed a higher education course in philology at Azerbaijan State University (Presently Baku State University) in 1952 with honored diploma. He then completed a master’s degree from 1952 – 1955. Then he defended his doctorate degree dissertation under the title of “Jalil Mammadquluzada’s artistic prose” in 1958. He successfully defended Ph. D course dissertation in 1969 under title of M A. Sabir Democratic Azerbaijan Republic’s Press”.

Mammad Mammadov has served as a junior researcher at Nizami Literature and Language Institute affiliated with Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences from 1956 through 1970. Professor Mammad Mammadov, who joined to State Pedagogy University in 1970, promoted to associate professor, then to professor degree there and finally became the Dean of Department of Azerbaijan Literature (1976 – 1982), then to the Dean of the Faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology (1989 – 1997) where he was the source of a lot of valuable and effective works. He has given some seminars on Literature of Azerbaijan and Critical History at “Nakhchivan” and “Tafakkur Universities.

Professor Mammad Mammadov is one of the fame and well-known researchers of M. A. Sabir and Jalil Mammadquluzada who are among the highest peaks of the Azerbaijan literary. The academic and scientific publication of Jalil Mammadquluzada’s “Drama and Proses” (Baku, 1958) and M. A. Sabir’s “Hophopnama” indicates that Professor Mammad Mammadov is a talent literary scholar and literature criticism scientist. He is the author of more than 20 books and above 100 scientific papers.

Professor Mammad Mammadov has also served as adviser professor in dissertation works of 1 Ph. D degree student and 9 doctorate degree students.  He was the member of scientific board and became the member of Expertise Council of Philology Branch of Attestation Committee affiliated with the Presidency.

“When a figure lives a honesty life …”, compiled by Tayyar Salamoghlu and Yaqub Babaye, was published in 2005 in commemoration of 75th birthday and 55th year of his academic activities of Professor Mammad Mammadov. The book deals with the honorable life of Professor Mammad Mammadov.

Professor Mammad Mammadov passed away on April 9th, 2006.
