Biography

Piyush Tewari is an award-winning social entrepreneur focused on improving road safety and emergency medical care across India. He is the Founder and CEO of SaveLIFE Foundation and has been awarded the Ashoka Fellowship, the Echoing Green Fellowship and the prestigious Rolex Award for Enterprise for his work in the area of road safety and trauma care. Piyush is an empaneled speaker with The Outstanding Speakers Bureau and is the subject of “The Golden Hour”, a feature documentary produced by Roma Sur and Jesica McGough of the Film School at University of Colorado, Denver. He is also a commentator on Road Safety on Indian television and has also been featured on Satyamev Jayate, the popular TV show hosted by Actor Aamir Khan.

Early Life and Career

Piyush Tewari was born in Kanpur, India to Reena and Vinay Tewari on May 19, 1980. Piyush has two siblings, Neha (sister) and Anshul (brother). Piyush went to Naval Public School in New Delhi and holds a bachelor's degree in Information Technology from Delhi University.

During his time in college, Piyush was closely involved with AIESEC, a global student-led organization. Immediately after college he joined the India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF) where he led various “nation brand building” initiatives. Following his stint at IBEF, he joined the Calibrated Group — a US-based private-equity firm – and became the Managing Director of the company’s India operations in early 2008.

Inception of SaveLIFE Foundation

Piyush founded the SaveLIFE Foundation in 2008. After his cousin died in a road accident, he started studying the space of emergency care. Piyush discovered that according to the Law Commission of India, 50% of all the road accident deaths in India can be prevented if the victims were to get care on time. He then invited his friend and mentor Krishen Mehta to join him in setting up the organization with a mission to enable Bystander Care — the immediate care that Police and public can provide emergency victims, especially those of road accidents, to enhance their chances of survival — in India.

SLF started with training police personnel — the first responders at most accidents — in basic trauma and life support skills. During the research, SLF identified various gaps in the existing legal framework around road safety and emergency care in India, hence started developing legal recommendations also. Throughout this period, Piyush continued working with Calibrated Group and investing his personal savings into SLF. In May 2011, Piyush resigned from the Calibrated Group and joined SaveLIFE Foundation full-time as its President and CEO.
