Biography

Peter Gott (22 May 1653 – 16 April 1712) was an English politician.
He was the eldest son of Samuel Gott of Battle, Sussex and educated at Gray's Inn.
He was appointed Sheriff of Sussex for 1688. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Hastings from 1690 to 1695 and again from 1698 to 1701. He was also member for Sussex from 1708 to 1710 and for Lewes from 1710 to 1712.
He became a director of the New East India Company in 1698 and was a director of the Bank of England from 1698 to 1700.
He died aged 58, possibly by suicide having allegedly hanged himself, and was buried at St Saviour's, Southwark. He had married his cousin Martha, the daughter of Thomas Western of St Dunstan-in-the-East, ironmonger. They had five sons and four daughters.
