Biography
Paul Daniel Williams (born 23 August 1972) is a British medical doctor and Labour Party politician. Since the 2017 General Election, he has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Stockton South.
Professional career
Williams studied medicine at the University of Newcastle. He volunteered for four years in Uganda, and has previously worked in James Cook University Hospital and the University Hospital of North Tees.
After that he was a GP at Tennant Street Medical Practice in central Stockton, and latterly the chief executive of Hartlepool and Stockton Health GP Federation. He is a trustee of ARC Theatre & Arts Centre, Stockton-on-Tees and Catalyst the Voluntary Development Agency for Stockton’s charity sector. He plans to continue to work as a GP while he is in parliament.
Views
He is in favour of accountable care systems in the NHS led by primary care and public health. He says that markets do not work in health. He supports a move away from the partnership model of general practice to a system provided at-scale by GP-led not-for-profit provider organisations, employing salaried doctors.
Personal life
He and his wife, Vicky, a nurse, and their two daughters, Emmeline, 5, and Mira, 2 live in Stockton.
