Paul J. Lioy

Paul J. Lioy was an American environmental health scientist known for his research on the health effects of exposure to environmental contaminants, particularly in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Lioy was a professor at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and was also a member of the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute (EOHSI).

Lioy received his B.S. in Chemistry from St. Peter's University and his Ph.D. in Environmental Science from Rutgers University.

Lioy's major research areas included air pollution, environmental health risks, exposure science, and toxicology. He conducted extensive research on the health effects of exposure to contaminants such as asbestos, lead, pesticides, and particulate matter.

Lioy was a leading expert on the health effects of exposure to World Trade Center dust following the 9/11 attacks. His research on the environmental and health impacts of the attacks provided valuable insights into the short and long-term health effects experienced by first responders, recovery workers, and residents of the area. Lioy also played a key role in establishing the World Trade Center Health Registry, which tracks the health of individuals affected by the attacks.
