P. V. Parabrahma Sastry

Sastry was a native of Pedda Konduru in Guntur district. His ancestors had settled in Hyderabad.

Sastry was selected for the National Fellowshipof the Indian Council of Historical Research. Sastry was one of the two persons selected for the fellowship in the year 2015. The ICHR is a premier historical research body under the HRD ministry. Dr Sastry was awarded a PhD by Karnataka University for his work on the history of the Kakatiya dynasty and early socio-economic conditions of Andhra Pradesh from 500 BC to 1000 AD. He worked with the Department of Archaeology and Museums until 1981. He conducted village-wise epigraphical surveys in the Telangana districts.

His contributions to Telugu historical research was mentioned in the pre-release events of the movie Gautamiputra Satakarani based on the archaeological and historical research on the Satavahana dynasty that he conducted.

Sastry has written historical and archaeological works and in collaboration with other historians. His works include:

Parabrahma Sastry Felicitation Volume: This book, in two volumes has been brought out in honour of Sastry who is known for his contribution to epigraphic and numismatic research. The 59 papers included in the two volumes deal with a variety of themes and disciplines such as archaeology, rock art, temple art and architecture, iconography, epigraphy and numismatics, Hindu, Buddhist and Jaina religion and philosophy, Indian literature of various periods, folklore, new history and contemporary social issues. The volumes, presenting a panoramic view of Indian history and culture, would become an important source of information for students and scholars and also to a general reader.

Sastry died at the age of 96 on 27 July 2016, due to prolonged illness. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and a son. Chief Ministers of both the Telugu States expressed condolences to the family members of Dr. Sastry. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu opined that Dr. Sastry secured a permanent place in Telugu History. 'It was because of P.V. Parabrahma Saastry, the world came to know about the history of Sathavahana Rulers and Kakatiya Dynasty,' he remarked. Hindupur MLA Nandamuri Balakrishna claimed that he was deeply pained to hear the news of Dr. Sastry's demise. He said, Dr. Sastry's research and books were priceless and that he will be remembered as someone who loved Telugu language, culture and traditions. On behalf of Gautamiputra Satakarni film unit, Balakrishna expressed condolences to the family members of Dr. Sastry.
