Biography

Odette Eid (1922 – July 13, 2019) was a Lebanese/Brazilian artist who became well known in Brazil for her sculptures including those of fantastic animals.

Life

Eid was born in 1922 in Zahlé in the Lebanon and moved at about the age of three to Brazil. Eid studied Art History at IADE taught by Paulo Ramos Machado.

She visited the studios of Domenico Calabrone and Elvio Beccheroni in the 1980s and 1983 was when she began her work sculpting fantastic versions of imagined animals in bronze

She exhibited her sculptures at major exhibitions abroad but frequently in São Paulo. She has sold art to national and private collectors in over a dozen countries.

When she was 90 she spent four months working on a sculpture that was displayed on Avenida República do Líbano in 2000. The work celebrated 500 years of Brazil. The sculpture shows the people of the world hugging around a tree. She was pleased to include her home country of Lebanon but disappointed that someone stole a stone from the bottom that she had particularly chosen.

To celebrate her 95th birthday Galeria Estação ran a free exhibition of six of her large sculptures. They works had all been created since 2000 and they were cast in aluminium. Eid died in 2019 in São Paulo.

Awards

Eid won an award at the 1st Biennial of the Latin American Anniversary of Plastic Arts in Buenos Aires, and she too first place at the XX Chapel Contemporary Art Exhibition in São Paulo.

Eid died in São Paulo in 2019.

Private life

She married Calim Eid when she was 20 and had four children.
