Quick Facts
Biography
Nomiki Konst, is an American activist and political commentator. She worked for The Young Turks and Our Revolution, a progressive political action organization developed from the Bernie Sanders 2016 presidential campaign. Konst was a candidate for the 2019 New York City Public Advocate special election.
Early life
Nomiki Konst was born in Tucson. She has Greek roots from the island of Kalymnos. As a child, her family moved to Buffalo, New York, where her mother became a legislator in Erie County. Konst attended Nichols School, a private, prep school in the area, and the University of Arizona, though Politico could not confirm her graduation. She was an actor, an organizer for Barack Obama, and in the late 2000s, she founded an organization related to Capitol Hill entertainment, Alliance Hollywood, about which there is little documentation.
Politics
In 2012, Konst appeared in Tucson newspapers as a candidate for Arizona's 8th congressional district, following the assassination attempt on Representative Gabby Giffords, but did not appear on the ballot. Konst later said that she did not run for the office.
In New York, where Konst said she moved in 2011, she became an anti-fracking activist. With journalist Wayne Barrett, Konst founded the short-lived Accountability Project nonprofit for investigative journalism, but was not a journalist for the project. After television appearances for the project, by 2015, she regularly appeared on cable news channels as a Democratic political strategist. She campaigned for Joe Biden to run for president and worked with the policy organization Truman Center, but later described her position there as insignificant.
Konst worked for The Young Turks, where she described her work as being an "investigative reporter." Her remote broadcasts there included the Flint water crisis and Hurricane Maria. She was laid off in June 2018. Konst also hosted "The Filter", a show on SiriusXM radio. She later served on the Democratic National Convention's platform committee and, after the 2016 Democratic National Convention, served on a committee that reviewed the party's nominating process. Konst worked for Our Revolution, a progressive political action organization developed from the Bernie Sanders 2016 presidential campaign.
Politico described her campaign for the 2019 New York City Public Advocate special election as ambitious, including her proposals to decentralize the role to a representative in every borough, to move the New York City Department of Investigation within the office, and to remove the office from the line of succession to the mayor. According to the New York City Board of Elections, Konst first registered to vote in New York in 2018.
