Nina Zaharovna Ulyanenko (17 December 1923 – 31 August 2005) was a Soviet Flying ace during World War II and Hero of the Soviet Union.
Biography
She was born in Vyatka in 1923 to a worker family. She studied at the Aviation College. She flew in 1940 for the first time. She took cadet courses.
World War II
She went to the front in May 1942 working for night bomber regiments. In 1944 she became the commander of the 46th Taman guard night bomber regiment. She took part in the Battle of Stalingrad. She flew missions in Crimea, Caucasus, Poland, East Prussia and eventually in the Battle of Berlin. She was a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1944. During the World War she flew 388 combat missions with 530 sorties. Due to her exemplary performance during the war she was declared a Hero of the Soviet Union on 18 August 1945.
Later life
Between 1947-51 she was a deputy in the Supreme Soviet. From 1957 she worked as a teacher. She died on 31 August 2005.
