Biography

Nikolaos Doxaras (Greek: Νικόλαος Δοξαράς; 1706/10 in Kalamata – 2 March 1775 in Zakynthos) was a Greek painter of the Heptanese School, born in the Ionian islands.

Biography

He was the son of the Greek painter Panagiotis Doxaras. In 1729 he joined the Venetian army, and also studied painting in Venice. In 1738 he returned to the island of Leukas and in 1745 became an army officer. Between 1753 and 1762 he worked in Zakynthos.

Some of his works were destroyed during the earthquake of 1953, but others have been preserved in the National Art Gallery of Greece. An original work, The Birth of the Mother of God, remains at the Byzantine Museum of Zakynthos.

Nikolaos Doxaras continued the artistic tradition of his father by replacing the Byzantine-style icon painting works by Italian-influenced painting. His works have been crucial for the orientation of Greek painting towards Italy.
