Biography

Muzaffar Khan (born February 4, 1969) is an entrepreneur, philanthropist, author, investor and film producer born in Karachi, Pakistan. He was Senior Strategist at Moore Capital Management LLC, one of the largest hedge funds in the world. Khan retired in 2003 to become the Vice Chairmanof ACOPS, an international environmental charity and consultant to the Man Environmental Capital Opportunities (Man ECO)division of Man Group, a British alternative investment management business with about $75 billion under management. Early in his career, he worked in private banking at Citibank and then as a foreign exchange trader at Barclays Capital.
Khan is an expert in carbon credits trading He advocates the involvement of private sector in reducing global emissions.

Early Life and Education

Khan grew up in London attending Dulwich College, where he was a horseback rider and played rugby for the school. He graduated in 1987.

In 1991 he graduated from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial and Business Economics.

In 1992 he graduated from King's College London with an MA in English Literature.

In 2007 he graduated from the LSE with an MSc in Development Studies.

Career

Early career

He started his career on the financial sector in Citigroup's private banking division managing Middle East and Africa. Later he continued working for Barclays Capital as trader in Emerging Markets. He also worked for the English Trust Company Ltd, helping with corporate finance deals in Asia.

Moore Capital Management (from 1998 to 2003)

In 1998 Khan joined the Moore Capital Management’s Emerging Market Division (MEM), and later he became the team’s senior strategist. The division's portfolio was one of the largest hedge fund groups of the world. The team was primarily focused on macro strategies. Assets under management grew from $250 million in 1998 $1 billion in 2003. Khan was also the risk manager of the fund's portfolio.

ACOPS, Man ECO and Man Global Securities (from 2003 to 2008)

When he left Moore Capital, Muzaffar became the Vice-Chairman of ACOPS, which had received a $30 million grant to address in the Russian arctic environmental challenges. At ACOPS he was in charge of policy setting and strategic direction. After ACOPS he became a consultant to Man Global Securities (Man ECO).

As of today he works for Alchemy Ventures, social enterprise founded by him in 2004. Alcemy Ventures was born with the mission to increase social mobility and reduce aspirational poverty in the world’s youth. He spends time visiting universities and mentoring young people. He recently joined the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga as a visiting lecturer. His mentorship philosophy was described on ‘Racing Towards Excellence’, a book co-authored with one of his mentees, Jan Sramek. He also is an advisor and strategic consultant to individuals, governmental organizations and corporations.

Publications

He co-authored a book in 2009 called Racing Towards Excellence with Jan Sramek, Goldman Sach's trader (a mentee of him). The foreword is written by Sir Howard Davies.

Proceeds from Racing Towards Excellence book sales originally funded the non-profit website Oxbridge Admissions Info, which provides advice to students looking to apply to Oxford and Cambridge Universities and has been used by over 100,000 students.

Racing Towards Excellence tries to approach the gap between school, university and employment by analyzing the things that drive an individual.

Mentorship, Philanthropy and Public Speaking

Khan has mentored hundreds of students for two decades. He started with his younger brothers, his two first mentees, for whom he was a custodian while they were in England. This is where he discovered his love for mentorship , helping his brothers get into top UK universities. He later went to Tibet to study eastern philosophies

Alchemy Ventures

When he left Moore Capital he founded in 2004 founded Alchemy Ventures. A social enterprise to increase social mobility and reduce aspirational poverty on young people. He is the managing director.

In 2006 Khan started visiting schools and universities lecturing on outperformance and career progression. This programs are structured as a series of lectures and one-on-one CV sessions. He has helped to create a career mentorship programme for the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga.

Entrepreneurship

He was board member at Space Energy AG between 2009 and 2012, this company goal is to develop space solar power: creating solar power satellites and trying to get that energy to Earth. This USA-based company also sells surface solar farms and has offices in China, Canada, Switzerland and UAE.

Film Producer

Khan became involved in film production working with some mentees in the industry. He has been as an executive producer on Is This Free? a British short comedy completed in 2011.
