Biography
Michael Randolph "Mike" Freelander (born 23 April 1953) is an Australian Labor politician and former paediatrician. He received an MBBS at the University of Sydney, and is a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (Paediatrics). He practiced as a paediatrician from 1978 to 2016. Dr Freelander became the federal member for Macarthur in the Australian House of Representatives after winning the seat at the 2016 federal election on July 2, defeating sitting Liberal member Russell Matheson. A recent electoral boundary redistribution transformed Macarthur from a safe liberal seat to a marginal seat. Dr Freelander was the first Labor MP to hold the seat for 20 years since the Keating Government lost the 1996 federal election.
Dr Freelander has served on the House of Representatives Standing committee on Health, Aged Care and Sport from 15 September 2016 and on the standing committee for Social Policy and Legal Affairs from 12 October 2016.
He has six children and five grandchildren and lives in Campbelltown.
