Biography

Sir Michael George Parke Stoker CBE FRS MD FRCP (4 July 1918 – 13 August 2013) was a British physician and medical researcher in virology.
He studied medicine at Clare College, Cambridge and St Thomas' Hospital in London, gaining his MD in 1947, after serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War II. He was a Fellow of Clare College from 1948 and an assistant tutor and Director of Medical Studies there from 1949 until he moved to Glasgow University in 1958. There he was the first Professor of Virology at the University (the first Chair of Virology to be established at a British university) from 1958 to 1968 and was appointed Honorary Director of the Medical Research Council Unit in 1959. He was the Director of Imperial Cancer Research Fund Laboratories from 1968–79 and President of Clare Hall, Cambridge University 1980-87.
He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1968 and delivered their Leeuwenhoek Lecture in 1971. He was made a CBE in 1974 and was knighted in 1980.
