Biography
Melanie Gillman is an American queer nonbinary cartoonist, illustrator, and lecturer living in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Gillman is known for the LGBT webcomic As the Crow Flies, and specializes in LGBTQ Young Adult comics.
Education
Gillman graduated from the Center for Cartoon Studies in 2012 with a Master of Fine Arts. Gillman received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Colorado Boulder earlier.
Career
Gillman has taught Professional Practices at the California College of the Arts (CCA) since 2015, and is currently a Senior Lecturer in Comics. Gillman teaches other courses at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design and the Art Students' League of Denver, and is also a writing fellow at the Tulsa Artist Fellowship program since 2017.
Gillman's comics have been published by Boom! Studios, Iron Circus Comics, Lion Forge Comics, Slate, VICE, Prism Comics, Northwest Press, and The Nib.
Awards
Gillman was awarded a gold medal for As the Crow Flies by the Society of Illustrators.
Comic Cons
Gillman participated in the annual Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE) in 2013 and 2016, and the AnomalyCon in Colorado in 2017.
