Biography
Colombian businessman Mauricio Ramos is the chief executive officer (CEO) of a telecommunications and media company named Millicom, part of a leading Swedish entrepreneurial investment group Investment AB Kinnevik.
In April 2015, Ramos joined Millicom as CEO from Liberty Global PLC, which brands include Virgin Media, UPC, Ziggo, Unitymedia, Kabel BW, Telente, VTR and Liberty Puerto Rico. With operations in 14 countries and 53 million homes passed, Liberty Global PLC is the largest international cable company.
Ramos, as president of the company’s Latin American division from 2006 to 2015, is credited with developing its mobile and broadband businesses in the region, delivering operational improvement and positive financial results.
He was appointed chief financial officer, Latin American division, in 2005 when Liberty Media International, Inc joined with the cable TV and telephone company UnitedGlobalCom, Inc (UGC) to form Liberty Global.
Ramos was previously a partner and vice president at the Investment Banking Services Ltd (IBS) and assistant director of the Deutsche Morgan Grenfell office in Bogota, Colombia. He also worked for the Office of the president of Colombia and taught economics at Universidad de los Andes and Universidad Externado in Bogota.
Ramos is chairman of TEPAL, the Latin American Association of Cable Broadband Operators and is a founding trustee and a former board member of the Chilean chapter of The Nature Conservancy.
From 2007 to 2011 he served as director of the American Chamber of Commerce in Chile.
Ramos earned a degree in economics (1993), a degree in law (1994), and a postgraduate degree in financial law (1995) from Universidad de las Andes in Bogota. He is married with three children and is an avid mountaineer, sailor and long distance runner.
